The machine runs for about 5 hours and the noise is a soft hum with periodically, soft grinding noise. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to use. After a few days, the compost bin contents begin to emit an odor. Even the simple act of taking the contents of my compost bin to the garden can get put off for a later time. There have been times when I did not empty the compost bin in time and the contents would begin to break down and create an odor. I make vegetable broth with my vegetable scraps and have been composting the remaining scraps on my kitchen counter in this Compost Bin. It is important to me to keep waste out of the landfills.
